Release : 36-image converter 4.7.1 Alpha build 140 (“Tiger Chameleon”)

As promised we are releasing the first development alpha of 36-image converter 4.7 “Tiger Chameleon” to the world. It has been in development for 3 months yet and includes many interesting changes especially for people with advanced camera’s. This is also the first public version which includes the new Core Image Processing Unit.

36-image converter 4.7 is far from finished but the current release already shows huge improvements, but still isn’t stable yet. We could say that it’s already 20% finished. Here’s a full list of all changes in this build :

36-image converter 4.6 : One week roundup

It’s been a week since we released 36-image converter 4.6 which brings 36IC again one step closer to becoming one of the top image editors, by adding a new interface, a more stable conversion engine and basic support for layers.

In one week time we have already received good feedback concerning the update and are climbing towards the top positions on CNET’s Download.com with +-340 downloads a day, topping 480 downloads on Wednesday. We directly had 1.827 downloads in the week of it’s release and we will probably have a +2.100 downloads a week result for the last week of May. This means 36-image converter defeating XnView in popularity and climbing to the 17th position out of 1.600 image editors with a bit luck even the 15th position. So maybe you can find us on the second page of Download.com’s “Image Editing Software”-section. These results make 36IC 4.6 our most popular application ever by far and with the largest marketshare in its category of all our applications (0,1%), obviously we must have been doing something good.

We are also busy developing the next version of 36-image converter. We are thinking about losing the entire internal conversion engine of 36-image converter and we are currently researching support for all filetypes supported by that engine. So we will have to add TIF, TIFF, TGA, PBM, PGM and PPM support to the 36CONVERT module instead. We will completely drop output support for RAW and perhaps replace it by PostScript, SVG or DXF support. This will make 36IC much more stable, lichter and ensures that the concerning filetypes are converted successfully. This is the same engine that is also included in 36-image express so 36Ix will also start supporting TIF, TIFF, TGA, PBM, PGM, PPM and PostScript or a vector image format. We will also add a notification to the PII system which enables large images to be converted to be encrypted and decrypted successfully, since that is a problem in the 36-image express Beta. We have already successfully implemented TIF and TIFF, now we have to port TGA from our experimental testbase to 36CONVERT, the next filetype we will be researching will be one of the vector filetypes and we will try to find a solution for the Portable Bitmaps, but so far so good.

So most updates for 36-image converter 4.6.2 will be beneath the surface on the 36CONVERT-module but we will also fix some small issues with the object insertion function and tweak some stuff. If the performance and stability improvements are big enough and we succeed into adding enough new functionality to the conversion engine, the next version might as well be 4.7 so we will keep it with the codename “Tiger Chameleon”.

Tiger Chameleon will be much faster and more stable.

"Tiger Chameleon" will be much faster and more stable.

36-image converter 4.6 could feature batch conversion

Now one of the greatest misconceptions about 36-image converter is that it can batch convert images. Well it can’t, but we are going to change this. In this version or one of the following 4.6.x versions there will be a tool which will enable you to select multiple files and send them to 36-image converter for batch conversion or even resizing. We will use the bulk file selector of the recently released FileTorment 4.0 for this. So you will simply be able to select an amount of files and add them to a list, when you are ready you can click a “Send to 36IC for conversion”-button, and the files will be converted, one by one as soon as possible. This would support all 36 input filetypes, except password protected PII and would support all output filetypes, including password protected PII.

36-image converter 4.6 “Chameleon-War” is expected to be released at the end of this month and will possibly feature a new default  interface to fix the visibility issues, a new rendering engine which support images up to 5.000×5.000 pixels or more, batch conversion to avoid mistakes about 36IC being a batch converter or not, stabilized and faster conversion for tif, tiff, raw, pbm, pgm, ppm and targa images and an amount of minor tweaks. It could also support a few extra output filetypes.

The next version 4.6.2 will probably handle the performance of 36-image converter by tweaking the resources and modularizing the bigger components.

36-image converter 4.5 what to expect?

The release of 36-image converter 4.5 is approaching and it will not be a spectacular release like 4.4, but the improvements will be visible. Version 4.5 “Chameleon” is devoted to removing the issues that some users are experiencing and creating a solid base to add new features like Layers or more resources and in/output filetypes.

Themes :
You will now be able to change the theme of 36-image converter. This was function was implemented to enable users with a low contrast generating graphics card to view the interface of 36-image converter. With this you will be able to easily change the theme from the normal “Twilight”-theme to a new green theme called “Ooze” using the configuration panel. More new themes will be made available in the extra’s channel of the DashBoard after the release.

Bigger images :
No, “Chameleon” won’t enable you to edit 5.000×5.000 images but will enable you to edit images the dimensions of your screen resolution minus 100 pixels. So if you have a 1024×700 screen you will be able to edit 924×600 pixels images. So if you want to complain about this after the new release we will simply say : “Buy a new graphics card or a bigger screen!”.

Image associations :
When uninstalling 36IC, some people still discover that some extensions aren’t restored and are still associated to 36IC. This will be fixed by adding a function which opens a page when the uninstaller exits. There you will be able to directly download a patch for this issue.

Smaller installer :
We will try to downsize the installer, because 36-image converter is very close to the 10mb in size. We will try to downsize this to 7Mb by putting some optional content online and integrate executables in each other.

Small improvements :
When resizing you can sometimes experience a blue line in the left or the right of the image. This is caused by the virtual save. We will now add an intelligent function to Virtual Save which will check the border before resizing and compensate the faulty pixel.
We also discovered minor errors in the reliability of the built-in PII image encryption, this will also be fixed.
The conversion speed to the following filetypes might be improved : RAW, PBM, PPM and PGM.
And to end with, there have been a few minor updates to the DashBoard.

36-image converter 4.5 is slightly delayed and will be released in the first week of Januari 2009.
